Borough
Market: a stroll through London's larder
Gathering the best
of British and foreign produce all under one roof, it's one of the great gastronomic
destinations in Europe. Take a trip to south London one Saturday morning, and
give your tastebuds a treat...
Nibbles of creamy Caerphilly
cheese, slices of spicy Spanish chorizo, slurps of hot Norfolk cider and finger-licking
morsels of sticky French pastries - your
first visit to Borough market is like dying and going to gourmet heaven.
From far and wide, food lovers converge on this south London culinary oasis
to buy the best of British produce, stock up on exotic delicacies and sample
some of the finest foods from around the world.
Thankfully, whether or
not you're shopping for that special - maybe romantic - dinner
party, most stalls in the small, covered market on Southwark street offer visitors
a taste of their mouth-watering treats.
As you meander through stalls offering organic Scottish beef, wild game of
every description, plump Greek olives, finely cured Sardinian hams, juicy Caribbean
mangoes, fresh organic vegetables and still-warm French breads, you can't help
but stock up on a feast of your favourite foods. And you'll probably find yourself
ravenously hungry.
Luckily, the 50 or so stalls are dotted with vendors selling sizzling snacks
such as wild venison burgers, barbecued chorizo-and-rocket rolls, and good-old
London pie-and-mash. And for the sweet-toothed among us: crepes dripping with
home-made honey, chunks of creamy Devon fudge and luxury hand-made chocolates.
250 years of Borough
There's been a fruit and
vegetable market on this same 4.5-acre site since its establishment by Act of
Parliament in 1754. In the Victorian era it gained its nickname of 'London's
larder'. Ships from all over the world unloaded their produce straight into the
market from London Bridge docks.
