Eating delicious
food and catching up with a group of friends is a great way to relax. But choosing
a place with great cooking and the right atmosphere can be tricky. Impress your
friends with these four cracking restaurant recommendations in the Modern Cuisine
category - north,
south, east or west...
NORTH
The North Star, New North Road, Islington
Nearest station: Essex Road (overland) Stylish
grub, simple décor and a cool ambience have made this recently
refurbished gastropub a hit with the trendy North London crowd. The menu offers
simple treats - using excellent ingredients - such as rich sautéed mushrooms
with chorizo, succulent pan-fried sea bass with chick peas, spinach and tomato
salsa, and dreamy raspberry-crème brulee. Efficient, friendly staff help
you relax and enjoy an unhurried, flavoursome, good-value meal in either the
main restaurant or on the mezzanine. You can also enjoy al fresco dining on the
terrace (weather permitting!) EAST
Café Naz,
46-48 Brick Lane, E1
Nearest tube: Aldgate East Fuse
contemporary Bangladeshi specialities and classic curry favourites, add a pinch
of panache with ultra-chic surroundings and you've got this funky, sophisticated
dining experience. After cocktails at the bar, settle down to a feast of tasty
treats from the sub-continent. Tip: for palates jaded by sub-standard, over-spiced
Curry House fare, try the Mysore Masala Dosa : crispy rice pancakes filled with
crisp vegetables, sharp chutney and cheese, served with coconut chutney and savoury
rice. Mmmm... WEST Devonshire House, Devonshire Road, Chiswick W4
Nearest tube: Stamford Brook Creative
menus, offering imaginative dishes using fine, fresh ingredients served in an
unpretentious, laid-back atmosphere give this recently opened gastropub the edge
over most of its west London rivals. The dining space is classic and stylish,
the food sublime. You'll be sorely tempted with dishes such as: home-cured bresaola
with baby beetroot and fresh horseradish, slow-roast leg of Cornish lamb with
ragout of tomato and cepes, and American pumpkin pie with spiced crème
fraiche. Sorely tempted indeed. SOUTH Gourmet Burger
Kitchen, 44 Northcote Road, Clapham SW11
Nearest station: Clapham Junction (overland) This
Kiwi-run joint is a must for its big, juicy, 100-per-cent prime beefburgers with
a host of fabulous toppings, fat chips and the creamiest milkshakes this side
of the river. A fun, lively atmosphere - with slightly cramped tables, it
must be said - makes for an informal night of top tucker and plenty of laughs.
The food is simply delicious and the mood in the room is always upbeat, so get
there early - this place is always busy. But then that's half the fun. Back to Top
