Free - Link exchange type programs are usually free. Normally an
impression ratio of 2/1 means that you will earn one banner impression
for every two you serve from your site. This can work well if your site
already generates a lot of hits. You will soon earn sufficient impressions
to make an impact throughout their network.
Fee - Highly
targeted banner delivery on high profile sites comes
at a price. Some ad companies charge per thousand impressions served (CPM),
whilst others charge per click through (CPC). Either way you have more
control over the geographic location, time, and nature of sites your banner
is served on.

With affiliate marketing you recruit other websites to partner with you
in exchange for commission. You provide the affiliate with your advertising
banner and tracking code, which in turn is placed on their website.
When a banner click-through
is generated from the affiliate's site, the program will log the visitor's
activity right through to your order form. If a product or service is
then purchased, the customer pays the merchant directly and the affiliate
is paid a commission for that transaction.
